Managing Workplace Stress

  • May 11, 2016

Sickness isn't the only thing that is contagious. So is workplace stress, and it's affecting your employees' happiness, productivity, and career satisfaction. As an employer, what can you do to decrease workplace stress and maintain high job satisfaction? Of course each employee has different stressors, triggers, and relievers, but here are some ideas to get you thinking about what would work best for your team:

  • An effective place to start is to manage your own workplace stress and demonstrate that to your employees. Your actions and emotions will rub off on those around you, so by lowering your own stress levels you'll naturally lower the stress level of your coworkers.
  • Allow a proper balance between work and home life. Don't call your employees after hours unless it's absolutely necessary. Discourage employees from working off hours or extra long days. This will lead to burn out and possible job resentment and increase stress.
  • Help your employees prioritize their tasks. Surprisingly, multi-tasking isn't the most productive way to work. By prioritizing and organizing your tasks, you and your employees will be able to work more efficiently and decrease the stress stemming from too many tasks.
  • If an employee reaches out to you about their workplace stress, listen to their concerns. Learn what is making their job stressful and have some action items to combat their stress level. Exercise empathy and compassion. Recognize that their stress level has surpassed a normal level and validate their feelings. Help them come up with a plan to decrease stress and enjoy their work.
  • Let your employees know they are expected to take breaks, not only by your example but by saying it out loud. By making breaks an acceptable practice you will allow your employees to decompress and come back to their desk with a fresh mind.
  • Give workers the opportunity to participate in decisions that affect their job. This will give their job more meaning. When an employee is able to use their talents the results may surprise you!
